Smart Commute Toronto - Central Launch
November 7th, 2008
Mayor David Miller and Colleen Bell, General Manager of Metrolinx Community Relations and Initiatives, joined downtown commuters at City Hall to launch Smart Commute Toronto-Central. Hundreds enjoyed live music, delicious food, hot cocoa, the commute calculator, and other information from supporting area partner organizations. Even the electricity for the band echoed the event's mission as it was generated by bicyclists on site.
Also at the event, an innovative photo contest was launched: “Once Upon A Commute” which calls for photographers to capture their ‘commuting story’ in a collection of images. The winning submission will be published in Spacing in 2009.
To draw people to the event, directional signage was placed inside and out of City Hall. Call to action banners were found next to all pockets of elevators, table top signage was placed on tables in the cafe on the main level, and stand up signs directed patrons inside after enjoying the live music.

Car Free Day- Mississauga
September 21st, 2008
Smart Commute Mississauga partnered with the City of Mississauga and the Ontario Chapter of the Sierra Club of Canada to introduce Mississsauga's first International Car Free Day — a growing global movement celebrated by more than 100 million people in more than 1,500 cities around the world.
The goals of Car Free Day are to remove up to 1,000 cars from Mississauga’s roads, representing a reduction of 60,000 kilometres travelled and 14 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, while raising awareness of sustainable transportable options and showcasing Mississauga Transit.
To kick off Car Free Day, the Smart Commute Expo joined Smart Commute Mississauga for the free family bash at the Civic Centre on Sunday, Sept. 21. The event included live music entertainment, prize drawings and information about sustainable transportation in the City of Mississauga.
Roughly 100 attendees signed up at the Smart Commute Expo to go Car Free and discovered the effects of their current commute on the environment.
